The Road To Emmaus
Passion Play, Act 10, Scene 2
But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. And, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.  Luke 24:21
On that same day two of Jesus’ followers were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking to each other about all the things that had happened. As they talked and discussed, Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them;  but their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. And He said to them, “What are you talking about to each other, as you walk along?”
They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered Him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?”
He asked them, “What things?”
They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed Him over to be condemned to death and crucified Him. And we had hoped that He would be the one who was going to set Israel free! Besides all that, this is now the third day since it happened.  Some women from our group were at His tomb early this morning and came back with an amazing report that His body was missing, and that they had seen some angels there who told them Jesus is alive!. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see Him.”
Then Jesus said to them, “How foolish you are, how slow you are to believe everything the prophets said. Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into His glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
As they came near the village to which they were going, He walked ahead as if He were going on. But they urged Him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them. When He was at the table with them, He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking to us on the road, while He was opening the scriptures to us?”
That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has indeed risen, and He has appeared to Simon Peter.” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how He had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.  Luke 24:13-35  [Adapted]

Look For The Second Right Answer
But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened.  Luke 24:21
Look for the second right answer.  Everything that the disciples said was correct, but the conclusions they drew were wrong:
What have I been hoping or trusting God would do? Is today “the third day” and He has still not done what I expected? Whenever we insist that God should give us an answer to prayer we are off track. The purpose of prayer is that we get ahold of God, not of the answer.
We look for visions from heaven and for earth-shaking events to see God’s power. Yet we never realize that all the time God is at work in our everyday events and in the people around us. If we will only obey, and do the task that He has placed closest to us, we will see Him. One of the most amazing revelations of God comes to us when we learn that it is in the everyday things of life that we realize the magnificent deity of Jesus Christ.  Oswald Chambers

Hallelujah
The beauty of the Easter story, powerfully captured  in a version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah:  https://bit.ly/3Oi66cs
A crown of thorns placed on His head
He knew that He would soon be dead
He said did you forget me Father did you?
They nailed Him to a wooden cross
Soon all the world would feel the loss
Of Christ the King before His Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
He hung HIs head and prepared to die
The lifted His face up to the sky
Said I am coming home now Father to you
A reed which held HIs final sip
Was gently lifted to His lips
He drank His last and gave His soul to glory
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
The soldier who had used his sword
To pierce the body of our Lord
Said truly this is Jesus Christ our Savior
He looked with fear upon his sword
Then turned to face his Christ the Lord
Fell to his knees crying Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Took from His head the thorny crown
And wrapped Him in a linen gown
And laid Him down to rest inside the tomb
The holes in His hands, His feet and side
Now in our hearts we know He died
To save us from ourselves oh Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Three days went by again they came
To move the stone to bless the slain
With oil and spice anointing Hallelujah
But as they went to move the stone
They saw that they were not alone
But Jesus Christ has risen Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Easter 11:00am: This Changes Everything

The Resurrection: This Changes Everything
The earliest Christians believed in the Resurrection not because they couldn’t find a dead body but because they found a living Christ. There is not one recorded instance of denial of the Resurrection among the Apostles or the ~500 other witnesses who saw the risen Christ. They had compelling reasons to recant, even unto their deaths. Not one.  (Note 1)
“If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that He said. If He didn’t rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what He said? The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like His teachings, but whether or not He rose from the dead.”  (Note 2)

Easter 6:00am – The Empty Tomb

The Empty Tomb
He is risen.   He is risen indeed!
Early Sunday morning one of the friends comes back with rags and a jug of water and a box of the grave spices that are supposed to cut down on the smell. She’s braced for the task. But when she comes to the grave she finds that the linens have been thrown into the corner and the body is gone.  Evidently anonymous burial isn’t quite anonymous enough after all.
She sits outside in the sun. Here at the edge of the desert the insects have woken up.  A bee is nosing about in a lily. The lily is like silk thinly tucked over itself, but much more perishable. It won’t last long. She takes no notice of the feet that appear at the edge of her vision. That’s enough now, she thinks. That’s more than enough.
Don’t be afraid, says Yeshua. Far more can be mended than you know. She is weeping. The executee helps her to stand up.

Saturday

A Day Like Any Other
Saturday, Jerusalem, Circa 33 AD
It is the Jewish Sabbath.   The city is quiet. The air above the city lacks the usual thousand little trails of smoke from cookfires. Hymns rise from the temple. Families are indoors. The soldiers are back in their barracks.
The Chief Priest grows hoarse with singing. The governor plays chess with his secretary and dictates letters. The free bread the temple distributed to the poor has gone stale by midday, but tastes alright dipped in water or broth.
The tomb in which Jesus was buried is guarded by a Roman Centurion.  Death has interrupted life only as much as it ever does. We die one at a time and disappear, but the life of the living continues. The earth turns. The sun makes its way towards the western horizon no slower or faster than it usually does.
Wait for it.  Things are about to change for eternity.
